A late 19th century Russian lacquer tea caddy from Fedoskino, petite and rectangular with a flush-fitting lid, crafted in black lacquered papier-mâché. The lid is adorned with a finely hand painted winter troika scene, a lively vignette of riders and horses moving across snow, rendered with delicate brushwork and subtle tonal shading. The composition, typical of Fedoskino miniature painting, stands out vividly against the deep black ground, its warm browns and soft whites creating an evocative contrast that draws the eye. The surfaces retain a softly aged sheen, with minor edge chips, light abrasions to the lacquer, and gentle rubbing to the painted vignette consistent with age.
Fedoskino, near Moscow, has been renowned since the late 18th century for its lacquer miniatures painted in oil on papier-mâché and finished with layers of polished lacquer that give the scenes their distinctive depth and luminosity. Troika subjects were among the most beloved motifs, celebrating the energy and romance of winter travel across the Russian countryside. Tea caddies such as this safeguarded a prized commodity and often served as tokens of refined hospitality, many destined for discerning European markets.
This charming caddy pairs the elegance of its dark lacquer form with the poetic storytelling of the hand painted lid. Lovely on a secretary, bedside, or library shelf, it brings a refined note while serving to store keepsakes, jewelry, or tea.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
