This monteith (glass chilling vessel) dates from the 19th Century. The container was filled with ice and then wine glasses were inverted and rested on their stems in the dipped parts of the edge. Originally it was most likely silver plated. Now it has a rich timeworn patina. It is recommended that this be used as a flower pot rather than a glass chiller due to the wear to the inside.
