A charming French lidded preserve pot dating from the 19th century, distinguished by its pleasingly simple cylindrical form and beautifully muted palette of cream, beige, and earthy brown glazes. The domed lid is finished in a rich dark glaze that provides an attractive contrast to the lighter body below. The hand-thrown nature of the piece is evident in the slightly crooked finial that tops the lid, as well as in the subtle irregularities of the form, lending it a warmth and authenticity.
The softly mottled surface, enriched by decades of use and age, will particularly appeal to lovers of timeworn pottery. Variations in the glaze, mineral deposits, and areas of wear have created a wonderfully nuanced patina, lending the piece depth, texture, and an evocative sense of history.
The pot bears a visible age-related crack, while the lid has a small loss to the rim, both consistent with a long working life and reflected in its characterful appearance. These imperfections do little to detract from its decorative appeal and instead speak to its authenticity and history.
A lovely example of traditional French country pottery, ideal for display in a kitchen, pantry, or collection of antique ceramics. Its soft tones and weathered surface pair beautifully with confit pots, stoneware crocks, and other rustic French wares.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
