This late eighteenth-century French mirror brings a poetic, timeworn glow to a room, its carved wood frame with gesso and gilding now mellowed to a deep antique gold with umber and reddish undertones. The rectangular frame is crowned by an exuberant openwork crest of floral and lattice motifs, rendered with the charming irregularity of provincial craftsmanship that marked the transition from Rococo flourish to early Neoclassical order. The surface shows its age in a beautifully expressive way: the pediment bears traces of old restoration with small losses that remain unobtrusive, and the lower portion of the frame displays stucco losses and rubbed gilding, all contributing to a richly layered patina that highlights the mirror’s long life and decorative soul. The mirror plate likely a later replacement.
