This small hand-thrown water pitcher from the Var region of southern France dates to the early 20th century. It features a rounded baluster body, a narrow neck, and a pronounced, strongly pinched spout that clearly reveals its hand-shaped construction. Made of red terracotta, it is finished with a glossy green half-glaze, leaving the lower body and foot exposed to show the warm clay beneath.
The surface displays fine age craquelure and kiln speckling, with scattered glaze losses consistent with long use, as well as an old accident to the handle, all contributing to its authentic, well-used character.
Placed on open shelving or a sideboard, this pitcher brings soft color and a grounded, rustic note to a refined interior. No longer functional as a pitcher, it is best enjoyed for decorative purposes, working beautifully as a relaxed vase for branches or garden flowers or repurposed to hold wooden spoons beside the cooktop. Its gentle sheen and honest patina add warmth and authenticity to kitchens, breakfast rooms, and thoughtfully collected living spaces.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
