A fixture at Chanteduc for several decades, this folding metal garden table has moved easily between the terrace and the interior of Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse near Vaison-la-Romaine, following the rhythm of the seasons and the occasion. Painted in the same soft, dusty sage green as the farmhouse shutters, it carries an easy continuity between house and garden that has always defined life at Chanteduc.
The table is a well-proportioned, unpretentious piece: a flat rectangular top with gently rounded corners set on a crossed metal frame that folds flat when not in use. Its strength lies precisely in its simplicity. The paint has been applied in layers over the years — Patricia recalls, "We repainted it several times" — and that accumulated depth gives the surface a lived-in richness that no new piece could replicate. The muted, matte finish speaks of use, care and the particular beauty of things that have been looked after rather than replaced.
Equally at home set for lunch on a sun-warmed terrace or pulled inside for an informal supper, this is a table that asks very little and offers a great deal. Today it would work just as well in a kitchen garden, on a balcony, or in a conservatory — anywhere that calls for something practical, good-looking and quietly connected to a life well lived in Provence.
