This unusual handmade concrete planter from the 1980s has a bold, sculptural presence and a distinctly Brutalist spirit. Its tall, tapering body rises from a broad circular foot, widening towards a thick, irregular rim. The surface is exceptionally textured, with a heavily encrusted, stone-like finish in chalky white, pale gray and warmer earthy tones. There is a fascinating contrast between the simplicity of its conical form and the expressive, organic treatment of the concrete, which gives the piece the character of an abstract sculpture. A drainage hole is positioned to one side of the base.
There is something decidedly artistic and eccentric about this planter, with its unconventional proportions and rugged, mineral surface. It would make a distinctive addition to a garden, courtyard or terrace, its rugged surface looking right at home among weathered stone, gravel and abundant greenery. Planted with trailing greenery spilling over the rim, the contrast between soft foliage and rough concrete would be especially appealing. It could also be left empty and appreciated as a piece of garden sculpture in its own right.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
