A striking French cast iron jardinière dating from the late 19th century. Inspired by the classical Campana urn, it features a scalloped rim richly decorated with scrolling acanthus ornament above a rounded body fitted with ring handles and raised on four elegant paw feet. Its sculptural silhouette and generous proportions give it a strong architectural presence, whether placed indoors or in the garden. A rare and handsome model.
The jardinière retains traces of its original off-white painted finish, now beautifully weathered through decades of exposure. Areas of oxidation and paint loss reveal the iron beneath, creating a richly layered surface that adds texture, and character. The base has corroded over time and now features a large opening. As such, the piece would require a liner or insert if used as a planter, while remaining a highly decorative architectural garden ornament in its own right.
Originally designed as a decorative garden ornament, pieces of this type were popular in French gardens, terraces, and orangeries during the 19th century. Filled with clipped boxwood, seasonal flowers, or olive branches, it brings timeless elegance and a sense of history to both traditional and contemporary settings.
