This large late 19th-century oil jar from the Drôme region of southeastern France is hand-thrown in terracotta, featuring a rounded, full-bodied profile with three sturdy handles and a short raised spout. The glazed surface displays a rich, glossy autumnal palette of olive, amber, and russet tones, animated by visible wheel marks and subtle kiln speckling that speak to its artisanal making.
The timeworn condition - including a small loss to the spout, scattered nicks to the rim, and areas of glaze wear- reflects long use and contributes to its authentic rustic character. Such jars were traditionally used to store and dispense olive oil, a hallmark of rural pottery from this region.
Today, this vessel brings earthy depth and quiet presence to an interior. Style it as a sculptural statement on a console or hearth, or repurpose it as a floor vessel for dried branches. Its mellow, mottled glaze pairs beautifully with natural stone, patinated metals, and textured linens, lending a grounded, timeless note to both rustic and contemporary spaces.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
