This small sculpted wall console is carved in wood with gesso and painted in cream with gilt accents. The bracket is richly modeled with scrolling foliage and a coiled, dragon-like creature, creating a bold, theatrical profile. It is topped with a faceted shelf, likely a later addition, as evidenced by the three visible screws on the top. Dating from the late 19th century, it reflects the Baroque Revival taste and its renewed interest in exuberant, sculptural decoration.
The piece retains a pleasing aged surface that underscores its period character, with rubbing to the gilt, light scuffs, and minor losses consistent with age Mounted in an entryway, living room, or along a staircase, it makes an evocative perch for a small bust or vase, either as a lone accent on a painted wall or as part of a gallery wall display to add depth and drama.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
