A set of eight Sarreguemines barbotine asparagus plates from Patricia Wells’s table at her Paris apartment, France, circa 1900. Patricia explains, “I love these, so special and unique. The French have a lot of single-use objects; you are not going to put carrots on that plate.” From her personal collection, they reflect the rituals of the French table that shape her world of cooking, markets, gardens and shared meals. Glazed earthenware with crisp relief, each plate is molded with a bundle of spears across the center. The palette is poised and fresh: a cream ground washed with spring green and dotted with blush pink tips, finished with fine green and pink lines at the edge. A scalloped rim and a small rocaille crest lend gentle movement; the lustrous glaze catches the light, and the hand feels satisfyingly substantial without heaviness. Their generous well and raised molding make them pleasing to use and beautiful to look at. This classic Sarreguemines form speaks to Patricia’s intelligent simplicity and exact observation, the French fondness for purpose-built pieces that add clarity to service. Bring them out for the first asparagus of spring with a bright vinaigrette, or display the suite on open kitchen shelves or a dining room wall where their fresh greens and soft pinks will lift the room.
