This set of four wrought iron wall sconces, handmade in the 1950s, carries a quiet strength and sculptural presence. Each sconce features an X-shaped backplate topped with a stylized flaring crest, pierced with small holes for wall mounting, and fitted with two twisted arms that end in scalloped drip pans. The arms were made for electrified fittings rather than candles, a detail typical of mid-century ironwork. The iron shows a deep matte charcoal tone with a timeworn patina, scattered oxidation, and a few gentle bends to the pans, all consistent with age and use. Likely produced by a regional workshop in southern France, they reflect the post-war revival of traditional blacksmithing that drew on medieval and Spanish Revival influences for country houses and coastal villas.
Hung as two balanced pairs flanking a doorway or mirror, or installed as a rhythmic suite along a corridor, they introduce a subtle architectural rhythm and a hint of drama. The patinated iron pairs beautifully with plaster, stone, and natural wood, lending warmth and character to interiors from rustic farmhouse to pared back contemporary spaces.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
