A rare set of four cast stone garden frogs dating to the early 20th century. Each frog is modelled in a naturalistic crouching pose with a gently raised head, resting on a square plinth base designed for easy placement along coping stones, pond edges, or garden walls. The surfaces display beautifully weathered tones of grey stone enriched by a naturally developed patina of moss and lichen. One frog, likely positioned in a less exposed area over the years, has developed a lighter patina than the other three, creating subtle variation across the set. Condition is consistent with long outdoor use, with attractively weathered edges, surface abrasions, and minor losses to some corners of the bases.
Substantial in scale and increasingly difficult to find as a complete quartet, these garden ornaments possess remarkable presence and character. Favored for ponds, fountains, and water gardens, frog figures introduce a playful note while lending charm and animation to the landscape.
This quartet is ideally suited to the corners of a basin or water feature, where the figures create a balanced rhythm and reinforce the geometry of the setting. Equally charming flanking steps, pathways, or a conservatory entrance, their richly weathered surfaces complement both formal garden architecture and more relaxed, organic settings.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
