A rare set of four Chinese lacquered leather cushions from the late 19th to early 20th century, distinguished by their rich deep red lacquer ground and delicate gilded floral decoration. The set includes two rectangular and two square cushions, all hand worked using traditional lacquer techniques that give the surfaces a luminous, jewel like quality. Each cushion is crafted from lacquered leather, a material long prized in Chinese decorative arts for its durability and ability to hold finely detailed ornament.
The deep red surface is enriched with intricate gilt scrollwork borders and flowering branches arranged in graceful compositions across the centers. Subtle irregularities in the gilding and the softly molded leather forms reveal the artisan’s hand, while the visible hand stitching along the edges adds another layer of character and craftsmanship. Over time the lacquer has developed a warm, glowing patina, with gentle crackling, light creasing, and softened edges that speak to decades of use and careful handling. These traces of time only enhance their authenticity and decorative charm.
Stack them at the foot of a daybed as a footrest or occasional seat, or place them among scattered seating to create a visual thread across a room. They can also be arranged as pairs and leaned against pillows on a bed as decorative accents. In any setting, they bring layered character and a subtle sense of travel.
