Set of Four Garden Planters w/ Weathered Finish, Attributed to Willy Guhl - 14¼" x 17"

This set of four square fiber-cement planters dates from the mid- to late 20th century and is attributed to Swiss designer Willy Guhl. Each has a strong, slightly tapered form with vertical ribbing, a substantial upper rim and four integrated handles, combining an industrial material with carefully considered proportions. The planters are pierced for drainage and retain a richly weathered brick-red painted finish, with extensive flaking, areas of exposed gray cement, and traces of outdoor use creating a wonderfully layered surface. 

Guhl was a pioneer of Swiss industrial design, known for exploring the possibilities of fiber cement in lightweight, durable garden furniture and planters. These pieces have the raw simplicity associated with his work and sit equally comfortably in vintage, brutalist or contemporary settings. As a group of four, they create a particularly strong rhythm when arranged along a terrace, courtyard or garden wall, whether planted identically or used for contrasting specimens. Fiber cement of this period may contain asbestos; we therefore recommend outdoor display and avoiding any sanding, drilling or alteration of the surface.
