This set of four French folding armchairs, probably dating from the 1970s, has a very chic neoclassical design inspired by the curule form, in the manner of Maison Jansen, the renowned Parisian decorating house celebrated for its glamorous interpretations of classical furniture. The slender black metal frames form graceful, sweeping curves, accented with polished brass finials, feet and decorative details. The armrests feature twisted grips and brass ends, while the ivory-colored fabric seats and quilted backrests are finished with braided cord and generously decorated with matching tassels. The contrast between the dark metal, cream upholstery and gleaming brass gives the chairs a sophisticated appearance, with a touch of extravagance. The fabric remains in good condition overall, with a few small stains and light signs of use, and all four chairs remain fully functional.
Very much in the spirit of the Hollywood Regency style's glamorous approach to neoclassical decoration, these chairs have an almost ceremonial presence, balanced by the lightness of their open metal frames and a subtle garden-inspired character. Arranged around a dining table, the four would create a particularly chic, slightly opulent setting. They would be equally appealing on a covered patio, where their airy structure would feel at home, provided the upholstery is protected from moisture. A pair could also make elegant occasional seating in a sitting room, bringing a touch of glamour to more contemporary furnishings.
