Set of Seven 18th Century Moustiers Faience Plates w/ Chinoiserie Decor - 9¾"

A charming set of seven faience plates from the late 18th century, produced by the Ferrat workshop in Moustiers, Provence. Each plate features a gently lobed scalloped rim highlighted with a soft rose border, framing lively chinoiserie scenes hand painted with figures among bamboo, flowers, and stylised landscape motifs. The warm cream tin-glazed earthenware is decorated in delicate tones of green, rose, ochre, and black, giving the ensemble the lightness and playful elegance characteristic of Provençal faience of the period. Condition is good overall, with small rim chips to several plates, a fine hairline to one example, and gentle surface wear consistent with age and use.

Chinoiserie decoration became especially fashionable in Moustiers during the second half of the 18th century, as French decorative arts embraced exotic and fanciful imagery inspired by the East. The Ferrat workshop was particularly admired for its spirited figure painting and refined polychrome decoration, bringing a lighter and more picturesque sensibility to traditional faience production. 

Displayed as a grouped wall arrangement, these plates create the layered, collected atmosphere so characteristic of refined French interiors. Their softly scalloped silhouettes and animated chinoiserie scenes bring movement and warmth to a wall, whether arranged around a mirror, above a console, or mixed with other ceramics and framed pieces in a relaxed Provençal manner.
