A set of seven bentwood bistro chairs by Fischel, dating from the early 20th century. Crafted in dark-stained beech, they feature classic hoop backs and round dished seats pressed with a scallop shell motif. The legs splay gently and are joined by shaped supports. The surfaces show a warm, timeworn patina, with light scuffs and minor wear consistent with café use, as well as natural variations in the wood tones. Faint remnants of original Fischel labels remain. All chairs are in good condition, solid and stable.
Note: Six chairs follow the same model, while one presents a closely related variation with a slightly different shell motif to the seat..
Fischel was founded in 1871 in Bohemia, and quickly became one of the leading manufacturers of bentwood furniture in Europe. Alongside Thonet, the firm supplied vast numbers of chairs to cafés and brasseries, particularly in France, where bentwood models became a defining feature of Parisian café culture.
Well suited to a kitchen or dining space, the set brings a warm and quietly inviting bistro character. Their light, curved lines soften a room, while the aged patina adds depth and a sense of lived history. They pair effortlessly with marble, zinc, or worn wood, and lend a gentle, convivial atmosphere that feels at once familiar and enduring, equally at ease in both traditional and more contemporary interiors.
