This charming set of six small French ironstone plates, made by Creil et Montereau around 1900, belongs to the series La Mode depuis cent ans (Fashion Over the Past Century). Each plate illustrates a different period in fashion history, with elegantly dressed figures gathered in little scenes of conversation, flirtation and social encounters. The costumes are wonderfully detailed, from elaborate bonnets and fashionable gowns to military uniforms, frock coats and top hats. A small inscription along the lower edge of each plate identifies the period depicted, together with its dates. Delicate colors in shades of rose, blue, green and ochre enliven the fine illustrations, while a narrow gilded line finishes each rim. The plates are in good overall condition, with some light rubbing and wear to the decoration.
These lovely little plates have a distinctly playful character, capturing the changing fashions and social manners of the 19th century with gentle humor. The figures, gestures and elaborate outfits invite a closer look, making each scene interesting in its own right. Arranged together on a wall in a dressing room, bedroom or breakfast room, the six would create a delightful display, their delicate colors and amusing scenes inviting a closer look. They would be equally charming brought out for afternoon tea or dessert, adding a touch
Condition and patina consistent with age.
