Set of Six Mid-Century Rectangular Planters, Willy Guhl for Eternit, c. 1950s - 35½"

This set of six Swiss fiber-cement planters dates from the mid-20th century and is attributed to Willy Guhl for Eternit. Each has an elongated rectangular form with finely ribbed sides, closely reflecting the restrained, functional garden designs associated with Guhl’s work of the 1950s. Made from lightweight, weather-resistant fiber cement, the planters were designed for outdoor use and are pierced for drainage. Their pale surfaces show natural weathering, staining and tonal variation from age and exposure. 

Swiss designer Willy Guhl (1915–2004) was a leading figure in 20th-century design, particularly known for his innovative use of fiber cement in sculptural yet highly functional garden furniture and planters. Finding a series of six is particularly appealing, as the repetition creates a strong sense of cohesion and rhythm when arranged along a terrace, courtyard wall or garden path. They can be planted identically for a more architectural effect or with varied herbs, grasses and flowering plants for a looser composition. Their long, low proportions make them especially effective used in sequence, where the simplicity of the form allows the planting and softly aged surfaces to take equal importance.
