Set of Three Large Mid 20th-Century Willy Guhl Garden Planters

This set of three very large fiber-cement garden planters dates from the second half of the 20th century and reflects the functionalist approach associated with Swiss designer Willy Guhl. Each has a substantial square form with gently tapered sides, vertical ribbing and integrated handle channels worked into the upper edges. The design is simple and strongly architectural, with a distinctly minimalist, almost Brutalist character. Their pale surfaces have weathered naturally outdoors, developing areas of staining, discoloration, rubbed finish and exposed gray fiber cement that give each planter an individual patina while keeping the group visually cohesive. Each is pierced for drainage.

Their generous scale makes them particularly suited to substantial shrubs, small trees or other architectural planting, while the repetition of three creates cohesion and a strong sense of rhythm when arranged along a terrace, courtyard or entrance. The combination of imposing proportions, restrained geometry and softly weathered surfaces allows them to sit comfortably in both contemporary and more traditional garden settings. As with many fiber-cement pieces of this period, the material may contain asbestos; we therefore recommend outdoor use and advise against sanding, drilling or otherwise altering the surfaces.
