This set of three rustic wooden stools likely dates from the mid-20th century and has a particularly raw, handmade quality. Each is built from a thick, irregular slab of wood whose outline follows the natural edge of the timber, supported on three simple splayed legs set directly into the underside. Though clearly related, no two are identical: the seats vary in shape, thickness and knotting, while the angles and proportions of the legs differ slightly from one stool to the next. Their dark gray-brown surfaces show deep wear, old tool marks, scratches, small splits and weathering, giving the wood a wonderfully tactile, almost sculpted appearance.
Together, the three feel as much like primitive sculptures as pieces of furniture. Their raw shapes and dark, weathered wood give them a Brutalist feel without losing their rustic charm. They would work particularly well as plant stands, low side tables or informal bedside tables, bringing texture and an earthy counterpoint to cleaner or more refined interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
