This set of three stacking chairs, produced in France between 1935 and 1955, embodies the industrial modernism of Xavier Pauchard’s iconic Tolix designs. Made of sheet steel, they display the characteristic tapered legs, curved backrests, and simple yet functional profiles that defined mid-20th century French metal furniture. The surfaces bear a remarkable, timeworn patina of layered paint in shades of turquoise, ochre, and rusted brown, giving them a richly pictorial quality. Their condition is authentically weathered, with worn edges, losses to the paint, and oxidation that enhance their sculptural presence and historical character.
These chairs were conceived at a time when industrial advances in sheet metalwork met a growing appetite for practical, modern furniture. Pauchard, a pioneer of galvanization in France, developed the Tolix line as lightweight, stackable seating for cafés, terraces, and workshops. Their durability and efficiency epitomized the interwar and postwar ethos of utility and accessibility, while their clean lines aligned with the aesthetics of modernist design. Over decades of outdoor and indoor use, surviving examples like these have become icons of 20th-century industrial style.
Today, the chairs bring both function and visual interest to interiors and exteriors. Their bold, weathered surfaces add texture and color to lofts, garden rooms, or eclectic dining spaces, and they sit comfortably alongside raw wood, concrete, or vintage textiles. Grouped together, they create an informal and artistic seating arrangement, while individually they work as accent pieces that introduce a note of history and patina into contemporary settings. Their lightweight, stackable nature ensures they remain as versatile as when first conceived, making them as practical as they are visually compelling.
