This set of twelve 19th-century iron shears has the direct, utilitarian character of old agricultural tools, with forged loop handles, broad cutting blades and individually riveted joints. No two are quite identical, and the variations in scale, proportion and wear give the group a particularly collected feel. Their surfaces have developed a rich, dark patina, with areas of rust, pitting and softened edges recording long use. Today, they are used as decorative objects, bringing texture, character and a strong sense of rural history to an interior.
Seen together, the repeated scissor form becomes unexpectedly graphic and sculptural. They could be arranged across a wall in a loose composition, displayed in a cabinet alongside other vernacular objects, or grouped more experimentally, as seen here, inserted into a section of raw timber. For a collector or someone with a less conventional approach to decoration, they bring texture, rhythm and a strong sense of rural craftsmanship to an interior. Note: The wooden log shown in the photographs is for display purposes only and is not included.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
