Set of Two 19th-Century French Guignol and Gnafron Hand-Carved Wooden Puppets - 18½"

This pair of 19th-century French hand puppets represents Guignol and Gnafron, the two celebrated characters of Lyon's traditional puppet theater. Their expressive faces are hand-carved from linden wood, with visible tool marks beneath the painted features giving each a distinctive personality. Guignol wears his traditional black cap, blue tunic with red trim and brown jacket, and still carries his wooden stick, an essential accessory to his role as a defender of the common people. Gnafron, his jovial companion, wears a broad-brimmed hat, a gray jacket and a generous ochre-colored neckerchief. Both retain their original-looking fabric costumes, now considerably worn, with fraying, small holes and faded colors. The painted faces also show losses and rubbing, all contributing to their wonderfully expressive, timeworn appearance. Both are presented on simple wooden display stands.

Created in Lyon by Laurent Mourguet in the early 19th century, the Guignol theater became an important part of French popular culture. Originally intended for adults, its lively performances used humor and satire to challenge authority and speak for ordinary working people. Guignol, quick-witted and rebellious, was accompanied by Gnafron, a good-natured shoemaker fond of wine. Their adventures made them enduring figures of French folk theater, a tradition still celebrated today.

Beyond their historical interest, these two puppets have considerable decorative appeal. The boldly painted faces, faded textiles and slightly mischievous expressions give them a strong folk-art character. Displayed together on a shelf, in a library or among other collected curiosities, they bring color, humor and a very personal sense of history to an interior.
