An English silver-plated biscuit jar from the mid to late 20th century. The oval body rises from an integrated stand with a rope-twist border and rests on four discreet ball feet. The domed hinged lid is finished with a turned knop, while the exterior is richly engraved with scrolling foliage and floral sprays in the Rococo Revival manner. The interior retains a warm, softly gilt tone that contrasts pleasingly with the bright silvered exterior. In very good condition, with light polishing marks and a touch of tarnish in the recesses, the hinge closes cleanly and the decoration remains crisp.
This softly luminous piece lends a sense of occasion to a breakfast nook or bar cart, perfect for biscuits, wrapped sweets, or tea sachets. It also sits beautifully on a marble console beside cut crystal, or paired with creamware and linen on a dining sideboard, where its soft sheen and tactile engraving bring an old-world charm. Equally appealing on a bedroom or bathroom vanity, it can be used to hold jewelry or cotton rounds.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
