Petite 18th-Century Cast Brass Mortar and Pestle - 3½"

This small 18th-century mortar and pestle is cast in what appears to be solid brass, with a warm golden tone and a beautifully aged surface. It features a gently flared rim, slightly waisted body and broad circular base. Simple raised bands articulate the exterior, while the surface shows fine scratches, darker spotting, areas of oxidation and traces of long use. The interior is similarly worn, with a softened, mottled surface from repeated grinding.

The accompanying pestle is also cast in metal and has a long, shaped handle with a small turned finial and broad rounded working end. It has a pleasing weight in the hand, while the grinding surface is densely textured with pitting and small indentations from repeated pounding. Further scratches and darkened areas along the shaft reinforce its long working history. 

This petite set would make a lovely accent in a kitchen or study, bringing a warm glint and an authentic sense of age.
