This small French giltwood console table, dating from the 19th century, has an elegant neoclassical design with a fixed white marble top and four slender, fluted legs resting on turned toupie feet. The shaped apron is decorated with a central cartouche-like ornament flanked by carved laurel branches, while stylized acanthus leaves embellish the square blocks above the legs. Below, a curved stretcher connects the four supports and is centered by a finely carved urn-shaped finial. The gilding retains a beautiful shimmer, with the original gold leaf showing just the right amount of gentle rubbing and small losses to give it an authentic, softly aged character. The table is stable and in very good overall condition, with a lovely marble top showing only light wear. The back is left undecorated, as the piece was designed to stand against a wall.
The combination of elegant proportions, delicate carving and mellow gilding gives this console the refined character associated with French neoclassical furniture. Wherever it is placed, the console brings a touch of richness and refinement while retaining a light, graceful presence. It would look particularly elegant in an entrance hall, with a small antique mirror above and a vase of fresh flowers on the marble top, creating a simple, well-balanced arrangement.
