Small 19th-Century Provençal Walnut Armchair w/ Pierre Frey Cushions

This charming 19th-century Provençal armchair is made from warm-toned walnut, with a gently curved crest rail, shaped arms supported on turned uprights and slender stretchers joining the legs. Its simple construction and originally rush-woven seat are characteristic of traditional Provençal seating of the period. The rush seat is currently concealed beneath a fitted floral covering and a custom-made cushion in Pierre Frey floral fabric, which could be removed easily if desired, although the condition of the rush beneath has not been assessed. The chair presents well overall, with discreet staining to the fabric and old metal reinforcements to the feet consistent with its long use.

Its compact proportions make it easy to place beside a fireplace, in a bedroom or tucked into a quiet corner. The floral cushions soften the rustic walnut and bring a fresh decorative note, while the aged wood retains the character of a traditional Provençal interior. Given its rather petite, narrow proportions, we would recommend it primarily as a decorative chair, lending an authentic country note to an interior.
