This small 19th-century copper cooking pot is distinguished by its warm, richly aged surface, rolled rim and simple wrought-iron swing handle. The body is slightly rounded underneath rather than flat, indicating that it was intended to be suspended over a hearth; as a result, it sits with a slight wobble on a flat surface. The wrought-iron handle is secured by riveted brass mounts, a characteristic detail of traditional copperware that speaks to the pot’s age and quality of construction. The copper has developed a beautifully varied patina, with reddish-brown tones, darker oxidation and visible traces of fire under the base.
Originally used for everyday cooking over an open fire, the pot is especially appealing today for the warmth and variation of its aged copper surface. It would make an appealing rustic accent on open kitchen shelving or beside a fireplace. It could also be repurposed decoratively as a hanging cachepot for herbs or flowers, preferably with a liner.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
