This small antique earthenware pot has a simple cylindrical shape finished in a soft buttery-yellow glaze, with fine crazing and subtle variations in tone. Its circular lid has a short central knob and a rather ingenious feature: a small notch along the edge that must be aligned with a raised projection on the rim before the lid can be lifted. This simple turning mechanism would have helped keep the contents safely enclosed, suggesting a vessel intended for something worth protecting. The lid retains some ingrained grime and darker discoloration from years of use, while small chips, age marks and wear around the base contribute to its lovely timeworn patina.
There is something particularly charming about this modest little pot and its cleverly designed lid, a practical detail that makes it all the more interesting. Its simple shape and warm, creamy color give it an understated appeal, while the unusual turning mechanism adds a touch of curiosity. It would look lovely on a kitchen shelf among antique pottery, on a dresser or in a cabinet of curiosities, perhaps used to hold small keepsakes. We recommend decorative use rather than food storage.
