From the Paris apartment of Patricia and Walter Wells comes this small silver-plate bowl, engraved on its side with a dedication dated 1927 — almost certainly a christening or birth gift, the kind of object a French family would commission to mark a new arrival with something lasting and beautiful. Compact and gently rounded, the bowl has a clean rolled rim and a slightly tapered form that sits comfortably in the hand. The interior base is engraved with a starburst or compass-point motif — eight radiating lines meeting at the centre — a decorative detail characteristic of French silversmithing of the period. Nearly a century of age and handling has mellowed the silver plate to a warm, slightly golden tone. The engraved date gives it a story; the craftsmanship gives it staying power. It works beautifully on a dressing table holding rings and small jewellery, on a desk as a catch-all, or at a table setting as a salt cellar or condiment dish.
