Small Art Nouveau Majolica Jardinière with Mascaron Handles, Circa 1900 - 5" x 12½"

This charming small majolica jardinière, likely produced in northern France or Belgium around 1900, features a richly sculpted earthenware body enhanced by vibrant hand-applied glazes. The gently waisted oval body stands on short splayed feet and is crowned by an elegant undulating rim, with bold mascaron handles at either end, whose deep charcoal glaze contrasts beautifully with the earthy palette of moss green, warm ochre, cream, and blush. Flowing vines, blossoms, and rocaille ornament are modeled in crisp relief across the exterior, while the luminous turquoise interior provides a striking contrast. The jardinière remains in very good antique condition, with only light wear to the raised decoration consistent with age. The underside bears impressed model numbers but no maker's mark. 

This jardinière reflects the golden age of French majolica, when richly modeled relief and vibrant glazes transformed everyday ceramics into decorative works of art. Drawing inspiration from Bernard Palissy's celebrated naturalism while embracing the flowing lines of Art Nouveau, these exuberant pieces became hallmarks of Belle Époque interiors, celebrating nature through color, texture, and sculptural form. 

Today, this petite jardinière makes an elegant centerpiece for a dining table, console, or mantel. Equally beautiful planted with bulbs or seasonal blooms, it may also be repurposed as a charming wine cooler. Its richly modeled relief and luminous glazes bring color, texture, and Belle Époque charm to any interior.
