Small French or Italian Painted Tôle Three-Light Chandelier, Early 20th Century - 41" x 21¼"

A small three-light painted tôle chandelier, likely French or Italian and dating from the early 20th century, with an especially fanciful, almost theatrical decorative character. Its scrolling metal frame is painted in a soft powder blue, outlined with touches of coral red and gilt, and entwined with olive-green leaves and small gilt spherical ornaments. Three delicate candle arms emerge from the body, each terminating in a flower-shaped bobeche, while twisted suspension rods continue the decoration upward to the gilded floral canopy. The painted surface shows rubbing, small losses and oxidation consistent with age. One arm is slightly bent, and the bobeches show wear, with one missing a petal. The existing wiring is not functional and will require professional revision before use. Painted tôle lighting often borrowed freely from Rococo and botanical ornament, using thin worked metal to achieve an animated silhouette with relatively little visual weight.

Here, the combination of pale blue, muted green and gilt gives the chandelier a particularly playful quality: decorative and exuberant, yet light enough in scale and construction to retain an airy presence. Its charm lies as much in the color as in the irregular rhythm of the hand-worked foliage and scrolls. Suspended in a bedroom, dressing room, powder room or intimate entry, it would introduce a whimsical note without overwhelming the space.
