Small Gilt-Metal Cage Chandelier w/ Colored Murano Glass Pendants - 36¼" x 17"

This elegant cage chandelier, dating from the early to mid-20th century, is built around a finely scrolling gilt-metal frame, its open structure animated by an abundance of delicate Murano glass pendants. The pendants take the form of delicate bells and stylized blossoms, the clear glass finely ribbed and molded, with softly scalloped edges picked out in shades of blue, pink and pale yellow. Suspended at different heights throughout the cage, the pendants are hung from strings of faceted clear beads that add further sparkle and movement. The aged gilding has a warm, softly mottled surface that contrasts beautifully with the fresh, jewel-like glass, which shows no visible damage.

The chandelier is fitted with two central lights aligned along the vertical axis of the frame: a candle-style light below and a second light mounted upside down in the upper section. They can be operated separately, allowing the chandelier to shift from a softer glow to a brighter overall illumination. It has been carefully restored and rewired in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence by a passionate specialist in historic lighting working closely with Mathieu Lustrerie, the renowned Provençal atelier specializing in the restoration and creation of fine lighting. Particular attention has been given to the quality and safety of the electrification while preserving the antique character of the piece.

The open gilt-metal cage gives the chandelier an airy, graceful silhouette, while the colored Murano glass introduces a playful, jewel-like quality. Touches of blue, pink, yellow and green bring a subtle lift of color and a sense of fantasy without overpowering the room. It would look particularly charming above a round table in a kitchen or breakfast room, or in a romantic powder room or bathroom where the colored glass can add softness and personality.
