This small Savoyard ceramic pitcher dates from the early 20th century and has the simple, sturdy form typical of traditional Savoie pottery, with a small loop handle and hand-pinched spout. Its deep chocolate-brown glaze has subtle variations in tone and texture, forming a rich backdrop for the freely hand-painted flower in cream, green and warm red. The surface shows areas of glaze loss around the rim and to the interior, giving the piece a distinctly rustic character without detracting from its overall charm.
Savoyard pottery was made for everyday domestic use, with simple practical forms often enlivened by bold, spontaneous painted motifs. Here, the single flower stands out particularly well against the dark ground, giving this modest pitcher an appealing graphic quality. Because of the wear to the glaze, it is best considered decorative today, displayed on a shelf or among other country ceramics, or used for fresh flowers with a watertight liner inserted inside.
