This delicate small gouache on paper of a parakeet, likely dating from the early to mid-20th century, depicts the bird perched on a branch, its long tail and softly layered plumage rendered in gentle shades of green, blue and gray, with a dark head and bright red beak providing a crisp focal point. The composition is simple and lightly handled, leaving plenty of open space around the bird and giving the work an airy, refined quality. It is signed under the branch, although the signature is difficult to decipher.
Framed by Galerie Vandevoorde in Paris, as indicated by the surviving label on the reverse, the gouache is presented under glass within a charming mirrored frame, with a pale blue mount that echoes the cooler tones of the plumage particularly well. One section of the mirrored molding on the left side is cracked, a small imperfection that does not detract from the overall decorative effect.
With its soft palette and playful bird subject, it would be especially charming in a child’s bedroom or nursery, where the pale blue mount and gentle greens would bring color without feeling overly sweet. It would also layer beautifully into a gallery wall of botanical and ornithological works, or sit on a bookshelf among books and small collected objects. Its delicate scale and mirrored frame give it just enough sparkle to feel special while remaining light and easy to place.
