Spectacular Pair of Italian Baroque Polychrome & Silver-Leaf Torcheres, c. 1700 - 68½"

A spectacular pair of very tall Italian torcheres likely dating from circa 1700 or earlier, carved in wood and richly decorated with polychrome faux-marble finishes and silver leaf. Each rises from a triangular green-marble-effect base on three boldly carved paw feet, above which the stem is articulated with architectural moldings, acanthus leaves, and gadrooned elements before extending into a tall, tapering shaft. The warm reddish faux marble is punctuated by darker green and silvered details, creating a particularly dramatic interplay of color and ornament. The surfaces retain expected age-related wear, losses, and rubbing to the paint and silver leaf; these traces give the decoration depth and a powerful sense of long history. 

Standing at roughly adult height, these grand Italian Baroque pricket candlesticks were conceived as floor-standing liturgical torchères, intended to flank high altars, crucifixes, or other important focal points within the church. Large beeswax candles were impaled on their iron spikes, raising the flames to a highly visible level in dim interiors. Their dramatic scale and richly carved forms reflect the theatrical language of Counter-Reformation worship, while the silver-leaf details would have caught and amplified the flicker of candlelight during services.

Today, these monumental antique torchères can be repurposed as dramatic floor lamps, bringing architectural scale, old-world romance, and warm ambient light to an interior. Equally, they can be left unelectrified and displayed simply as sculptural objects, preserving the full impact of their original form, patina, and Baroque exuberance.
