This wooden champagne shipping crate, originally made to hold two champagne bottles, bears a circular stamp on the lid for Ernest Irroy, a champagne maker in Reims. The hinged lid opens to a clean, unlined interior and retains a small metal hook at the front, as well as a bold stenciled mark on the inside of the lid reading “Champagne Irroy.” Crafted in softwood, likely pine, and finished with a warm, honeyed patina, the crate dates to the mid-20th century and reflects the widespread appetite for champagne, with sturdy construction designed to protect bottles destined for cellars and tables across France and beyond. The surfaces show scuffs, darkened nail heads, and age marks consistent with use, and the crate presents in good vintage condition with an appealing, honest patina.
This crate lends relaxed sophistication to a bar, pantry, or wine nook, where it can store bar tools, bottles, linens, or keepsakes. It is equally striking displayed on open shelving or tucked beneath a console, where its stamped typography and warm wood grain add texture and quiet history.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
