For years, this handsome stone sundial has greeted visitors arriving at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter Wells's farmhouse in Vaison-la-Romaine, mounted squarely on the front façade where it catches the Provençal sun.
Carved from a substantial slab of stone, it has the satisfying weight and texture of something quarried from local earth. The face carries the mottled, lichen-kissed patina of long outdoor life — grey deepening to charcoal in places, with soft mineral weathering across the surface. A rusted iron bracket holds it flush against the old limestone wall, the warm rust tones sitting naturally against the creamy, irregular stonework behind it.
Patricia recalls that they found the sundial at the same source where they discovered the stone and marble kitchen sinks. “It’s a welcoming piece,” she says, “and it works!” Ideally mounted on a sunlit, south-facing garden wall or façade in the Northern Hemisphere, or a north-facing one in the Southern Hemisphere, it is both an attractive architectural feature and a functional timepiece.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
