Striking 1970s Italian Glazed Ceramic Sculpture of a Big Dog- 40¼"

This large Italian glazed ceramic dog, dating from the 1970s, is modeled as a seated Great Dane-type hound, with a long rectangular muzzle, tall cropped ears and an elegant, attentive stance. The glossy black glaze gives the figure a sleek, almost lacquered appearance and catches the light beautifully across the body. The anatomical modeling is notably realistic, from the defined chest and shoulders to the long forelegs, articulated paws, powerful hindquarters and subtle folds around the muzzle and neck. Particular care has also been given to the collar, picked out in warm brown tones with a modeled buckle and stud details.

 The figure is hollow, with broad unglazed foot pads revealing the pale ceramic body beneath, and is unmarked. The dog is in good vintage condition, with light surface scratches and scuffs to the glossy glaze, together with some rubbing to the painted collar. Fine firing hairlines are visible to the unglazed underside, but they do not affect the stability or solidity of the figure.

Generous in size, the dog has the presence of a sculptural guardian and would make a strong decorative statement in an entrance hall, beside a fireplace or next to a leather sofa. The combination of realism, theatrical scale and distinctly 1970s Italian glamour gives the piece both character and presence.
