A striking carved wooden carousel horse attributed to the renowned workshops of Gustave Bayol, one of the foremost carousel makers of the Belle Époque. Captured in a lively galloping pose, it retains its original polychrome decoration, with richly painted saddle details and expressive features. Its dynamic silhouette and sense of movement give the piece a striking sculptural quality.
Wear to the original paintwork reflects decades of fairground use, enhancing its authenticity and charm. The horse also retains its original glass eyes, bit, leather reins, and stirrups, rare surviving elements that contribute to its exceptional presence.
The horse is presented on a removable iron display stand. Although not permanently attached, it rests securely and confidently in position, the stand providing stable support while allowing the sculpture to be easily removed if desired.

Born near Avignon in Provence 1859, Gustave Bayol trained as a woodcarver before establishing his famous workshops in Angers, where he developed one of France's most important carousel manufacturing companies. Active from approximately 1887 to 1909, the Bayol workshops produced an extraordinary range of fairground animals and became internationally renowned for the quality of their carving and exuberant design. Bayol remains one of the most celebrated names in the history of European carousel making.

With its substantial scale, gently timeworn original surface, and enduring sense of movement, this carousel horse would make a striking addition to a grand entrance hall, children's room, or boutique retail setting such as a toy or confectionery shop, serving as both a vibrant decorative centrepiece and a captivating piece of fairground history.
