A striking pair of shell and mother-of-pearl pendant lights, mid 20th century, likely from the French Riviera. Each is formed as a tapered ovoid lantern, sheathed in hundreds of translucent mother-of-pearl petals and small white shells arranged in dense rosettes over a wire armature. Suspended from brushed metal canopies, they are handcrafted with a remarkable sense of texture and richness. When illuminated, the shells reveal delicate natural veining, casting a soft, dappled halo of light. In good condition, with gentle age toning, a few tiny nicks to some edges, and natural irregularities inherent to the shells. Substantial in presence yet visually light and refined.
Echoing the spirit of 1960s and 70s design, these lights recall the work of designers such as Verner Panton, who explored organic forms and luminous materials to create immersive atmospheres. While rooted in that era’s fascination with texture and light, their natural composition and sculptural presence feel timeless.
Suspended as a pair above a dining table, in a hallway, or over matching round tables in a garden room, they introduce a graceful, refined accent with a pleasing verticality and a soft, ambient glow, especially at home in a coastal retreat or relaxed, light-filled interior.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
