This exquisite late 18th-century Italian writing desk is decorated with delicate hand-painted flowers, scrolling foliage and small birds in muted shades of green, rose and rust against a warm ochre ground. The sloping fall-front is framed by dark molding, while the sides are equally richly decorated with floral bouquets. Below, a single full-width drawer has a gently convex front, introducing a subtle Rococo curve echoed in the shaped apron and slender cabriole legs. The fall-front still locks with its original key and opens to reveal a delightful contrast: a deep terracotta-red interior fitted with pigeonholes for organizing papers and correspondence, and a small central drawer. Two pull-out supports hold the writing surface when open, while the lower drawer slides smoothly. The painted surfaces show extensive rubbing, scratches and small losses, with more pronounced wear to the red-painted back, all contributing to the piece's beautifully aged character.
The delicate Rococo decoration and warm palette give this desk a particularly beautiful decorative character. There is a lightness and spontaneity to the hand-painted motifs, while the deep terracotta-red interior provides a rich contrast when opened. As lovely closed as it is open, the desk would work beautifully in a bedroom or sitting room, combining practical use with the appeal of a finely decorated antique. Its graceful proportions, painterly finish and touch of Rococo fantasy would bring color and personality to an interior.
