A substantial late 19th-century olive jar from the Gard region, finished in a rich green glaze with beautiful tonal variation and characteristic runs from the firing process. The generous ovoid body is framed by two loop handles beneath a rolled rim and tapers gently towards the base. One handle has been restored and repainted, blending well with the surrounding surface. The glaze shows expected wear, small losses, and areas of exposed terracotta that contribute to its authentic, timeworn character.
Originally used for storing olives and other provisions, vessels such as this were valued for their robust construction and practical form. The vibrant green glaze and generous proportions give the piece a strong decorative presence, while subtle irregularities in the glaze and surface reflect its handmade origins and enhance the warmth and individuality of the piece.
The vessel retains its original unpierced base, making it better suited to decorative use than planting. Its generous scale and rich green glaze make it a striking accent on a farmhouse table, kitchen island, or beside a hearth, whether displayed alone or among a collection of other green-glazed pottery. Filled with branches in a watertight liner or admired for its sculptural form, it brings instant Mediterranean warmth and character to an interior.
