A large display case housing a collection of approximately 95 keys dating from the 18th to the early 20th century, assembled as a piece of folk art, likely from the collection of a metalworker. The rectangular vitrine is constructed in wood and metal with a glazed front, enclosing rows of iron keys arranged in a dense, rhythmic grid against a warm ochre ground. The keys vary in form and period, from simple utilitarian shapes to more elaborate bow designs, creating strong visual interest and a rich sense of accumulated history.
The glazed front opens on hinges and is secured by two small side latches, allowing access to the interior. The upper section is crowned with a decorative wrought-iron crest, pierced and designed for hanging; however, due to the substantial weight of the piece, it should be supported with appropriate brackets or a reinforced mounting system.
At once functional and decorative, this type of presentation reflects the pride of the craftsman’s trade, transforming a working collection into a display object. With its strong graphic repetition and material authenticity, it reads as both archive and artwork.
Striking on a wall, it suits an entry, study, or workshop-inspired interior, where its scale and pattern create immediate impact. It also works well in a contemporary setting, where the grid of aged iron keys contrasts with clean lines and neutral surfaces, bringing texture, history, and a sense of collected time.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
