A substantial early 19th-century French copper basin. The hand-raised cylindrical body features vertical riveted strap stays running from rim to base, complemented by broad copper reinforcing bands at both the top and bottom for added strength. The base is finely hammered, and the rim neatly rolled, with the interior retaining traces of its tin lining. Two substantial strap handles are secured with large hand-driven rivets. One is in copper and the other an old brass replacement with a more yellow tone, telling the story of a careful repair and serving as evidence of the vessel’s long and faithful use over generations. The surface displays a rich, warm copper color with traces of old polish, enhancing its authentic, timeworn character. Scattered dents, rim waviness, light verdigris at the seams, and expected wear to the tin interior all speak to its genuine history and enduring craftsmanship.
This versatile vessel belongs to the ferrat type, traditionally found throughout southern France, particularly in Occitanie and extending north into the Auvergne region. It was designed for strength and practicality, serving many roles in daily rural life. Vessels of this type were commonly used to draw water from the fountain and assist with household and farm tasks. The presence of a tin lining, however, indicates that this example was also employed for culinary purposes such as heating milk or preparing preserves.
Its generous presence and honest surface make it an evocative accent in a kitchen, scullery, or hearth. Line it and use as a dramatic champagne cooler, a cachepot for a citrus tree, or a handsome log or kindling bin. It also displays beautifully on open shelving with other copper, bringing authentic French country character to both traditional and modern interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
