Superb 17th-Century Italian Walnut Traveling Secretary Cabinet - 66½" x 44"

An exceptional Italian walnut traveling secretary cabinet dating from the late 17th century, likely Northern Italy. Constructed in two sections for transport, it features a bold moulded cornice above a fall-front writing surface that opens to reveal a beautifully fitted interior of drawers and cupboards with brass hardware. The lower section offers additional storage behind paneled doors, all raised on a gadrooned base with striking lion-paw feet. Original wrought-iron carrying handles remain to the sides. Richly architectural in form, this cabinet reflects the grandeur of the Italian Baroque, combining practical function with remarkable craftsmanship.

Designed to store correspondence, valuables, and personal effects, its multitude of drawers, cupboards, and concealed compartments (including hidden spaces within the cornice and a discreet compartment concealed behind a removable plank within the fitted interior) speaks to a period when furniture was both highly functional and deeply decorative.
