A striking early 19th-century French giltwood mirror in the refined Louis XVI style. Of generous scale, the rectangular frame is crowned by an exquisitely carved openwork crest featuring scrolling foliage, floral garlands, classical trophies, and a laurel wreath. The original water gilding over red bole retains a beautifully luminous finish, its subtle interplay of matte and burnished gold catching the light while highlighting the exceptional quality of the carving. The mirror retains its original mercury glass, remarkably clear for its age while displaying the characteristic crystalline sparkle and gentle movement unique to mercury plates. Two discreet reinforcing screws have been added to secure the crest, while the original back has been retained and fitted with a modern hanging system, which we recommend having checked before installation.
