This elegant French Louis XV commode, later transformed into a buffet, beautifully combines the sinuous charm of eighteenth-century furniture with the ingenuity and element of surprise created by its later adaptation. Crafted in solid hardwood, likely oak, the piece features a graceful serpentine façade, shaped apron, and short cabriole legs terminating in delicately scrolled feet. Its later blue-grey painted finish, softly highlighted with warm ochre lining, accentuates the molded drawer fronts and curved silhouette, while richly cast bronze rocaille handles and escutcheons lend the façade movement and sophistication.
Reconfigured during the nineteenth century, the two outer banks of faux drawers open as asymmetrical cupboard doors revealing a surprising interior fitted with wide, shallow pull-out trays, while the upper central drawer remains functional as originally designed. Originally likely intended for the storage of maps or ecclesiastical textiles, the trays are perfect today to store table linens, placemats, or neatly folded towels, while the muted painted finish lends the piece a soft decorative warmth full of timeworn charm.
